Why Does My Pigmentation Look Worse After Summer? A Facialist’s Guide to Post-Summer Skin in Leeds
If you have reached September, looked in the mirror and thought, “Where have those dark patches come from?”, you are definitely not the only person asking me this. After summer I often see clients whose skin suddenly looks more uneven, blotchy or pigmented, even if it felt fairly settled a few months earlier.
You might notice brown marks across your cheeks, darker patches around the mouth or forehead, old pigmentation becoming more obvious, or areas that your make-up no longer seems to cover in the same way. For some women, melasma can also appear darker after the brighter months.
The important thing to know is that this does not mean your skin has suddenly “gone wrong”. Pigmentation is complex, and the end of summer is simply a time when changes that have been building can become much easier to see.
Why can pigmentation become more noticeable after summer?
UV exposure is one of the biggest triggers for excess pigment. Your skin produces melanin as part of its natural protective response, so repeated exposure to daylight throughout spring and summer can leave existing pigmentation looking darker and can contribute to new areas of uneven tone.
And it is not only about lying in the sun. Everyday exposure counts too. Walking the dog, sitting outside for lunch, driving, gardening, holidays and simply being outdoors more often all add up.
Heat can be another factor for some pigmentation concerns, particularly melasma. This is one reason I am cautious about treating pigmentation as though it is simply a collection of “brown marks” that need to be aggressively removed. The trigger, your skin health, your hormones, your lifestyle and the type of pigmentation all matter.
Hormonal changes can play a part too...
Many of the women I work with are in their late thirties, forties, fifties and beyond, so skin changes are often happening alongside perimenopause or menopause. Hormonal fluctuations can influence the way pigmentation behaves, particularly melasma, which is why a patch that seemed manageable previously may suddenly become more stubborn.
This is also why I would never promise that one peel, one facial or one “miracle” product will make pigmentation disappear. My approach is always to understand what I am actually looking at first, then build a sensible plan around your skin rather than chasing the pigment.
Should you exfoliate more to get rid of dark patches?
This is where I often see people accidentally make things harder for themselves. When pigmentation appears, it is tempting to throw everything at it: stronger acids, scrubs, retinoids, brightening serums and multiple new products all at once.
But if that leaves your skin irritated and your barrier compromised, you have not created a healthy environment for improvement. Inflammation can make some pigmentation concerns more difficult to manage, so “stronger” is not automatically better.
I am very barrier-first in the way I work. Before deciding how much resurfacing your skin needs, I want to know whether it is calm, resilient and able to tolerate the treatment plan we are considering.
What can help post-summer pigmentation?
There is no single facial that is right for every person with pigmentation. Depending on your skin, I may use carefully selected exfoliation or a professional-grade peel, LED, targeted homecare and other modalities within a bespoke treatment. For another client, the priority may be restoring the barrier before we do anything more active.
SkinPen microneedling can also form part of a longer-term skin plan where it is appropriate, particularly when we are looking at overall skin quality, texture and signs of ageing alongside uneven tone. But again, I choose treatments because they suit the person in front of me, not because a treatment happens to be popular.
Daily SPF is also non-negotiable when pigmentation is a concern. Professional treatments can only do so much if the skin is repeatedly being exposed without adequate protection.
Why September is a useful time to reassess your skin
September feels like a natural reset. Summer routines settle down, we start spending less time in intense sunshine, and it is a good point to look properly at what has changed rather than carrying on with the same routine simply because it used to work.
It is also a good reminder that skin results are rarely created in one appointment. I normally talk to my clients about consistency, both with homecare and professional treatments. For many clients, a facial every four to six weeks can be a useful rhythm, although your individual plan may look different.
Think of it less as “fixing” your skin and more as supporting it consistently through the seasons and through the changes happening in your life.
Start with understanding your skin, not guessing at a treatment
If you are searching for a pigmentation facial in West Yorkshire, because your skin looks different after summer, my first advice is not to decide which treatment you need from a menu. Start by understanding what your skin needs.
That is exactly why my treatments are bespoke. I work from Bramley in Leeds and see clients from areas including Pudsey, Farsley, Rodley, Horsforth and Kirkstall. I want you to be able to come in with the problem you are seeing, rather than feeling you need to diagnose your skin or choose the right facial before you arrive.
A thorough consultation, skin assessment and realistic plan will always give us a better starting point than simply attacking a dark patch.
